The Lucienne Story

Located in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey County, Lucienne Vineyards is a new producer of premium Pinot Noir from an established winery. Owned by Nicholas Lucien Hahn of Hahn Estates, the winery is a separate facility tucked into the Hahn winery, actually a winery within a winery. As the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation has become one of the most prestigious Pinot Noir growing regions in California, Lucienne has resolved to focus top vineyard practices, expert winemaking, and the highest quality equipment to produce Pinot from the exceptional estate vineyards of Lone Oak and Doctor’s Vineyard.

The winery takes its name from two sources—Nicky Hahn’s middle name Lucien, but in the feminine form to honor the namesake of the mountain range where the vineyards are located, Santa Lucia. The range was named by the Spanish Padres who came to California to build a series of missions in the eighteenth century. Santa Lucia is associated with light (from the Latin root lux); she was known for arriving with a crown of candles to bring light to the darkness during the yuletide and winter solstice. The padres undoubtedly saw the luminescence of the mountain range and called it Santa Lucia. Her crown of candles graces our label.

The inaugural release was the 2005 vintage and included a Santa Lucia Highlands appellation and a Lone Oak single vineyard designation.
